Thoracic Pain

About

Thoracic pain, or mid-back pain, can be a debilitating condition that affects your ability to perform everyday activities and enjoy life to the fullest. The thoracic region, located between the neck and lower back, encompasses the twelve vertebrae of the middle spine. At our clinic, we specialise in treating thoracic pain through a combination of osteopathy and physical therapy, providing a comprehensive and personalised approach to your recovery.

Understanding Thoracic Pain

Thoracic pain can manifest in various ways, including sharp or dull aches, stiffness, or a burning sensation in the mid-back region. It can be caused by several factors, such as poor posture, muscle strain, injury, or underlying health conditions.

Common causes of thoracic pain include:

  • Poor Posture: Prolonged sitting, especially with poor ergonomic support, can lead to strain on the thoracic spine.

  • Muscle Strain: Overuse or sudden movements can cause muscle tension and pain.

  • Injury: Trauma from falls, accidents, or sports injuries can result in thoracic pain.

  • Herniated Discs: Discs in the thoracic spine can bulge or rupture, compressing nearby nerves and causing pain.

  • Rib sprains and strains: The ribs have various muscles, ligaments and tendons that attach directly onto them. If these tear or overstretch, every day tasks like breathing or reaching forward become difficult

  • Osteoarthritis: Degeneration of the cartilage in the thoracic joints can lead to pain and stiffness.

  • Scoliosis: Abnormal curvature of the spine can put stress on the thoracic region.

  • Underlying Health Conditions: Conditions such as osteoporosis or ankylosing spondylitis can contribute to thoracic pain.
