Will physiotherapy help with arthritis?
In 2025, over 600 million people worldwide were living with osteoarthritis; an increase of 113% since 1990 (WHO, 2023). Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint condition that causes pain, swelling and stiffness, affecting a person’s ability to move freely. As a consequence of reduced movement, muscles development often reduces leading people to become less able to perform physical activities.

Physiotherapy aims to educate and relieve individuals suffering with arthritis through various means including:

-
Movement therapy
-
Structured exercise prescription
-
Clear assessment of severity of arthritic joints
-
Strategies to reduce the likelihood of compensating with other weight bearing joints
-
Pain relieving techniques like TENS, hot/cold therapy, compression, massage.
-
Onward referral for techniques like joint injection or surgery if warranted and desired by the patient
Research shows that regular exercise, when performed correctly and in the right setting can help people with osteoarthritis reduce pain, move more comfortably, and improve their overall quality of life.
